★★ Nostrana INNER SOUTHEAST ITALIAN The wood-oven pizzas and pasta dishes get high praise, but it’s the little details that help make Nostrana special, like the fresh-crushed olive oil for dipping your home-baked bread. Cathy Whims is a champion of simple Italian cooking using the freshest of local ingredients. ★★ Olympia Provisions INNER SOUTHEAST CHARCUTERIE The big lighted sign that says “meat” sums up this place, which offers the best salami, sausage, bratwurst, franks, and charcuterie plates in town. All the products are handcrafted. This ain’t your typical hot dog vendor! ★ Pacific Pie EASTSIDE INDUSTRIAL BRITISH Here you’ll find those savory meat pies the Brits invented and that don’t often appear on American menus: shepherd’s pie, lamb pie, steak pie, pork pie, fish pie—and the more familiar chicken pot pie. The ingredients are fresh and local, and entrees come with soup or salad. Gluten-free and vegetarian casseroles, wraps, and pies are also available. ★★ Paley’s Place NORTHWEST FRENCH Iron Chef America and James Beard award winner Vitaly Paley helped to start the Portland food craze back in 1995 in this Victorian home in Nob Hill. ★★ Pazzo DOWNTOWN ITALIAN/PACIFIC NORTHWEST This time-honored downtown restaurant excels with its homemade pastas. The pappardelle “with grandma’s special Sunday meat sauce” (a veal, pork, and beef ragu) is meraviglioso, and the Caesar salad is maybe the best in town. Inspired desserts, too, but those are not necessarily Italian. 627 SW Washington St. (in Hotel Vintage).
